Learning WordPress with the Codex, Videos & Webinars

By Wesley Fryer

Whether you’re a novice or experienced blogger with WordPress, there are always new things to learn. Fortunately, the WordPress community supports several ways to extend your learning. In this post I’ll highlight several of these learning resources: the WordPress Codex, WordPress.tv, and free, regular WordPress webinars offered by iThemes.

The WordPress Codex (codex.wordpress.org) is a comprehensive, online guide to using WordPress. If you don’t have a WordPress blog yet, “New To WordPress – Where to Start” is a great initial article for you. Once your blog is setup, “WordPress Lessons” includes an excellent breakdown of available features and options for your WordPress blog. Spend some time exploring the different areas and options available in the WordPress Codex and utilize it to advance your knowledge.

WordPress.tv is another great resource to utilize to learn more about the WordPress community as well as specific WordPress skills. When you visit the site, check out the categories in the right sidebar. The How-To category includes many helpful videos, ranging from basic sessions to advanced techniques for WordPress developers. Some of the videos included on WordPress.tv were recorded live at WordCamps. A WordCamp is a meetup of WordPress enthusiasts, and provides a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the platform as well as share your own knowledge. Check out the WordCamp Schedule to see if there is an upcoming event in or near your area!

One example of a recent video on WordPress.tv is “Matt Mullenweg: State of the Word 2012,” posted this past week from San Francisco. These resources and this video in particular reflect the dynamic WordPress community which continues to grow!

In addition to these resources, iThemes offers free, regular webinars about WordPress for beginners through advanced users. Once each month, iThemes offers a live “WordPress 101″ webinar. These sessions are interactive, so participants can ask questions, but videos are also archived online for later viewing. Here’s the archive of WordPress 101 from July 2012.

Basic as well as advanced webinars are listed on webdesign.com/events. Upcoming webinars in August include:

  • How to Build a Website
  • Sublime Text Tips and Tricks
  • WordPress Localhost
  • BluePrint Basics – Building a Musician Site with Builder
  • Getting Started with Builder
  • Build Your Own WordPress Theme from Scratch

This last session is divided into two parts. There are TONS of free and great ways to learn about WordPress!

Check the complete schedule of upcoming Webinars on iThemes.tv and register for one that’s of interest to you!
